Environmentalists protest tax protest

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Taxes are due April 15. Some will get a refund, others will owe, but others are holding a tea party in protest, in honor of the Boston Tea Party over 200 years ago.

"We want to get people together and start working together to get rid of this excessive spending," said Jared Fagan, an organizer for Lafayette's Tax Day Tea Party.

The gathering is planned to take place on the John Myers Pedestrian Bridge to protest unfair taxation, but not everyone is pleased with the protestors' plans. Specifically, some groups are unhappy that actual tea bags will be used.

The Hoosier Environmental Council and the Indiana Department of Environmental Management say throwing tea bags into the river is a form of littering.

The tea party group's organizer, however, is dismissive of such concerns.

"In the original Boston Tea Party they actually dumped 342 crates of tea and the harbor is functional," said Fagan.

But dumping even a few tea bags in the river could be costly for the group. The Department of Natural Resources will have three boats on the Wabash during the protest and may fine the group $180 for littering.

The tea party is part of a national movement to protest taxes. The organizer says the threat of a fine isn't a deterrent, but an encouragement.

"That's part of what we're fighting against," explained Fagan. "The fact that they have the right to fine us for exercising our rights as citizens."

Environmental groups asked organizers to make a concession and dunk the tea bags in something besides the Wabash, such as a small pool. The organizer does not appear to be considering such a concession, and he said that there is only one option.

"The tea is going in the river," said Fagan.

DNR said it will make the decision today about if they'll fine the tea party participants for littering. The Indiana Department of Environmental Management says it will fine only if the tea bags cause a fish kill that can be linked to the tea party. The tea party tax protest is April 15 at noon to 6:00 p.m at the John T. Myers Pedestrian Bridge.
